Canada 2007
Leaving Whistler/Canada
Posted March 20th, 2007 by alexisWe had one last session in the hot tub before heading out for dinner, as we did need to drink up some of the beers in the fridge before leaving! Incidentally whilst packing I found a packet of travel tissues that I thought I'd lost when we were shopping in Vancouver for skis. It was a big thing at the time, honest!
Last Days Skiing
Posted March 17th, 2007 by alexisYesterday after watching Waiting and drinking a few beers, we headed out to the Crystal Lounge around 8:30. We got down there around 8:45 and it was emptier than previous visits, which was nice as we managed to get some good seats. It was an acoustics cover night, with a guitarist taking requests. I hadn't had enough beers at this point in the evening so I left it up to Paul to heckle requests. We managed to get him to play a little bit of Spirit of the Radio and The Trees by Rush!
Big Dump but Awful Weather
Posted March 16th, 2007 by alexisLast night we stayed in again, James and I had a little trip down the hot tub, during which the weather changed from snow to rain. I cooked dinner, which wasn't mince! It was a rather tasty chicken pasta dish, with rather too much pasta. We spent the evening watching the telly and WWE wrestling.
I didn't manage to get up that early, but awoke to the noise of a snow plough. Overnight there'd been a 6" dump, which wasn't forecast, but was very promising. In hindsight the huge clumps sliding off the roof of the hotel should have been a giveaway that the temperature was rising.
A Long Day
Posted March 16th, 2007 by alexisDidn't do much yesterday after Chris left - we had a Chilli that Paul made for dinner, then watched some TV before getting an early night. I didn't get up until about 9:30 so had a late breakfast. I then headed out about 11, but just as I got to the slope from the back door realised I'd forgotten my poles! I went down the blue slope out the back and caught the Wizard chair back up Blackcomb, then headed down Mainline/Green Line to Whistler village.
Steaks and Cuban Cigars
Posted March 15th, 2007 by alexisAs it was Chris' last night we went out for a steak dinner. Originally we planned on going to Earls but there was an undetermined wait there, so we instead went to the Keg. The food was somewhat disappointing. I had a crab, parmesan and spinach dip with tortilla chips to start, it wasn't bad but the tortilla chips were far, far too salty. For main course I had a sirloin steak with a lobster tail.
The Sun is Out!
Posted March 14th, 2007 by alexisIt's now Tuesday evening, so I'll recap on what's happened since Sunday afternoon. We went out to the Crystal Lounge where they were having an open mic night, as we thought Chris wanted to go up for a jam. Sadly Chris didn't but the evening was good and the place was possibly the best bar we've been to so far. Beforehand James got and made a dinner of fresh beef burgers, yet more beef in the diet!
Rain Spoils Play
Posted March 11th, 2007 by alexisWe went out to the Indian in town last night, not bad although it's the first place I've been to that let's you specify how hot your chosen curry is on a scale on 1-5. Also the poppadums were tiny spicy ones the sort you might cook at home out of a sharwoods packet. Oh and they put peas in their pilau rice. After sharing the sampler starter, I went for a tandoori mixed grill which was far too much to eat, and it was all washed down with a couple of pitchers of Okanaga Springs Lager. Paul then headed off to meet a friend and the rest of us headed back to the hotel for an early night.
Gladed Black Runs!
Posted March 11th, 2007 by alexisI cooked dinner last night, Burritos again, which used up the last half of the massive minced beef packet we bought. We then headed down into town to sample the Irish Pub, which was very good, I went through three different beers - a Kilkenny, a Bass and a local cream ale - all very pleasant, and a very pleasant pub - Canadas no smoking rules really make a difference. After that we headed onto the Amsterdam, which this time didn't have such good music, and I think by this point I was the only one still sinking pints, everyone else having wussed out onto spirits and mixers.
First Day on Whistler
Posted March 10th, 2007 by alexisAfter a good nights sleep - we all were well off by 10 last night, we headed over to Whistler mountain. Paul and myself went shopping in town first, so he could buy some bottom padding and I could get a lock for my skis. We then headed up the village gondola to the round house, from which we went down Upper Whisky Jack and Orange Peel.
Whistler Nightlife and Hot Tubs in the Snow
Posted March 9th, 2007 by alexisLast night (wednesday) we headed down into Town. First of all we visited the brew house, which unsurprisingly given it's name brews it's own beer. We first went for a pitcher of their I.P.A. which was OK but a little rough. So we next went for their Twin Peaks Pale Ale, which tasted a little smoother, but still wasn't that good. Paul refused to drink it stating that it "tasted wrong" and James described it as tasting of pipe cleaner. Still Chris and myself managed to polish it off just fine.
