Days 7 & 8 - Last Days in Val
I'm currently sat in the hotel bar (which isn't open) waiting for our transfer to Chambery at 12:30. Aside from the flight not arriving into LGW until 17:50, it's a much more civilised time that for most of the other people staying in the hotel who all had transfers around 6-8am this morning.
Anyway onto yesterdays ski-ing: again the weather was excellent, we went straight up the Funival on it's first run of the day and took the black Plan down towards Val. As the top section was so good, we took the chair from mid way back up and did it again. The bottom wasn't so good, a bit too icy, so we then headed up the Solaise Express, took the red run down to Le Laisainant, and then the chair up to the peak between Solaise, Montet/Le Fornet. From there we went down the easy blue to the mid station above Le Fornet. This was great fun, not only was it empty, but it was well groomed, fast and wide, lots of fast carve turns with hands close to the snow.
We then took the bubble up to Montet and spent an hour or so bombing down the various runs up there. For some reason everywhere was pretty deserted, we figure most tour companies probably change over on Saturdays. After that we headed back down to the base of Le Fornet and took the bus into town to get lunch at the Casino.
After lunch it was back up Solaise Express, and a few more runs around on top. In particular we did Le Cugnai a couple of times as this was now completely groomed compared to the other day where the top section was thick powder. However this run was destined to be the death of me, on the first run up the rather vicious old chair cracked me in the tailbone, then at the top when setting off, I somehow fell over onto my left thigh. Then the second time up I caught one of my fingers between the chair and my boot whilst getting on, and at the top got squeezed between my fellow passengers and fell over onto my right thigh. Fortunately that was the end of injuries for me.
We then took the blue run down to Laisanant and the chair back up, then the red back down to Solaise. We did a few more runs on top, including the red down the side, which was now quite slushy, still I managed to do it all in one go, which I was quite impressed with. As it was now about 3 we headed back to Val down the red run and took the gondola back up to Bellevarde. Then it was a run down diebold to the Marmottes chair, down the top bit of Orange to Tommeuses, down the red and blue to the Mont Blanc chair, then down the blue to Marmottes before a final run down Orange/Criterium and Verte.
Today we got up slightly later than usual, around 8:15, although a cretinous other guest did wake me up at 6am, thinking that we were someone else. After breakfast and packing we headed up to Val, did some shopping, well mainly just baulked at the prices and then headed back to the hotel.
